Mount Dottrel Central Otago Pinot Noir 2008
Tasting description
Our philosophy
Our philosophy is simple. To ensure Mount Dottrel becomes synonymous with quality, we aim to produce high-quality Pinot Noir wines which will bring excitement and pleasure to our customers – honest, unpretentious wine with character and true Kiwi charm.
Tasting description
Attractive wine presenting appealing Central Otago Pinot Noir characters of cherry and plum on the nose, supported by savoury mushroom complexity with hints of dried herbs. Elegant and textural on the palate, this wine has supple tannins with a persistent, lingering finish. An excellent complement to food, Mount Dottrel Pinot Noir 2008 will drink well while young, but will open up with careful cellaring.
Winemaking
Under the care of award winning winemaker Carol Bunn, this wine was crafted from a vintage with an exceptional crop, that was carefully managed and harvested to optimum ripeness at 25° Brix and fermented in small open-top stainless steel fermenters for approximately 21 to 30 days. The wine was barrel matured for ten months in 228L French barriques (approx 30% new and 70% one to three-year-old oak).
Analysis at bottling: Alcohol 14.0% TA = 6.0 g/L pH = 3.55
We choose to enclose our wine under screw cap to ensure freshness, avoid cork taint and to enhance the ageing ability of our wine.
Viticultural notes
Our vineyard is intensively and carefully managed by award winning viticulturists Robin and James Dicey of Grape Vision Ltd, Cromwell, New Zealand. The vines were hand thinned and leaf plucked from low-density vine plantings of Pinot Noir clones 5, 6, 667 and 777.
Our vineyard is situated on glacial schist – low-fertility, alluvial soils typical of the Cromwell Basin in Central Otago, New Zealand. We experience a cool climate of continental extremes – hot, dry summers with cool, dry autumns that promote intense flavour development of our fruit. The 2007 vintage yielded small bunches and berries, creating intense flavour with great colour and tight acidity.
