Mount Dottrel Central Otago Pinot Gris 2009
Tasting description
Our philosophy
Our philosophy is simple. To ensure Mount Dottrel becomes synonymous with quality, we aim to produce high-quality Central Otago wines which will bring excitement and pleasure to our customers – honest, unpretentious wine with character and true Kiwi charm.
Tasting description
This Central Otago Pinot Gris is crafted from selected fruit grown at vineyards in the nearby Bendigo and Gibbston Valley sub-regions, adding a Central Otago white wine to our Mount Dottrel range. This wine exhibits citrus and pear characters on the nose, while the palate is dry with bracing mineral notes. Textural and concentrated, this Pinot Gris is best served slightly chilled. Drink while young and fresh.
Winemaking
Under the care of award-winning winemaker Carol Bunn, ripe, hand-picked fruit and gentle winemaking were used to craft this exquisite Pinot Gris. A portion of the fruit was de-stemmed into bins to increase skin contact to impart greater flavour and body to the juice, before it was combined with the whole-bunch fruit in the press. About 15% of the juice was fermented in new and nearly new French oak for eight weeks to provide greater complexity and texture to the wine, with the rest fermented in stainless steel. The ferment was stopped with a touch of residual sugar remaining to achieve an attractive balance.
Analysis at bottling: Alcohol 13.5% TA = 6.4 g/L RS = 3.5 g/L pH = 3.45
We choose to enclose our wine under screw cap to ensure freshness and avoid cork taint.
Viticultural notes
Our vineyard is planted exclusively in Pinot Noir vines, so to bring you a white wine under our Mount Dottrel brand we selected this Pinot Gris fruit from vineyards in the nearby Bendigo and Gibbston Valley areas. The 2009 vintage saw good fruit set due to warm weather in December. However, the remainder of the season was unusually cool, resulting in a lighter harvest. Due to the slow ripening and lower crop level, the grapes developed excellent fruit intensity and sweetness.
Central Otago experiences a cool climate of continental extremes – hot, dry summers with cool, dry autumns that promote intense flavour development of the fruit.
Food match suggestions
Mount Dottrel Pinot Gris may be enjoyed as an aperitif and is a great food wine. It is an excellent companion for smoked fish or chicken, or your favourite spicy pasta dish.
