Mount Dottrel Central Otago Pinot Gris 2008
Tasting description
This Central Otago Pinot Gris exhibits spicy aromas of nectarine and pears, supported by bright acidity on the palate. This dry, textural and concentrated wine is best served slightly chilled. Drink while young and fresh.
Winemaking
Under the care of award winning winemaker Carol Bunn, ripe, hand-picked Pinot Gris fruit, gentle winemaking and careful management were used to craft this exquisite wine. Most of the fruit was whole-bunch pressed, with 30% stemmed and held on skins to build texture. The juice was then fermented in stainless steel at cool temperatures, with some lees stirring. A third of the wine was fermented in oak, not to gain taste, but to enhance the texture.
Analysis at bottling: Alcohol 14.0% TA = 6 g/L RS = 3.7 g/L pH = 3.6
We choose to enclose our wine under screw cap to ensure freshness and avoid cork taint.
Viticulture notes
Our vineyard is exclusively planted in Pinot Noir vines, so we sourced the fruit for this single-vineyard Pinot Gris from a vineyard in the nearby Gibbston Valley which is also managed by our viticulturists, Robin and James Dicey. This gave us the opportunity to bring you a third wine under our Mount Dottrel brand.
The 2008 vintage saw excellent fruit set due to fabulous weather in December. The good weather continued through January and February, allowing good berry development. This gave the resultant wines excellent fruit intensity and sweetness. Cooler weather leading up to harvest extended the ripening period, so the fruit could be picked in optimum condition.
Food match
Mount Dottrel Pinot Gris is a great food wine. It is an excellent companion for smoked salmon, chicken or food platters.
