Mitre Rocks Pinot Noir 2009

Mitre Rocks Pinot Noir

In the heart

Our passion is to produce high-quality Pinot Noir with distinctive depth and character that rewards the attention of our customers – high-calibre wine with heightened intensity and complexity that reflect the individuality of our vineyard terroir.

In the vineyard

Mitre Rocks vineyard is situated on the lower slopes of Central Otago’s Pisa Range, below the nearby Mitre Rocks formation. Our vines grow in glacial schist – low- fertility, alluvial soils typical of the Cromwell Basin. We experience a cool climate of continental extremes – hot, dry summers with cool, dry autumns that promote intense flavour development of our fruit.

Our vineyard is intensively and carefully managed by award-winning viticulturists Robin and James Dicey of Grape Vision Ltd. The vines were hand thinned and leaf plucked from low-density vine plantings of Pinot Noir clones 5, 6, 115, 667 and 777 under the direction of our award winning winemaker Carol Bunn.

In the winery

Under the care of award-winning winemaker Carol Bunn of Wine Artisan, this wine was crafted from beautifully ripe fruit, hand harvested at 24.5º Brix and fermented in small open-top stainless steel fermenters for 21 to 30 days. This wine was barrel matured for 12 months in 228L French barriques of which 60% were new. Minimal fining and filtration was used to preserve the wine’s natural character.

Analysis at bottling:    Alcohol 14.0%    TA = 6.0 g/L    pH = 3.50

We choose to bottle our wine under screw cap to ensure freshness, avoid cork taint and to enhance the ageing certainty of the wine.

In the glass

This barrel-selected wine, crafted from our very best parcels from the 2010 vintage, is dark and brambly, with complex layers of spice, mushrooms and fruit. The attractive bouquet combines Doris plum and cherry aromas with dried herb, liquorice and chocolate. These characters follow through on the palate, supported by fine-grained and supple tannins. This is a serious and structural Pinot Noir, built to last and to be enjoyed with food, especially game and mushroom dishes.
