Mitre Rocks Pinot Noir 2007
Tasting description
In the heart
Our passion is to produce high-quality Pinot Noir with distinctive depth and character that rewards the attention of our customers – high-calibre wine with heightened intensity and complexity that reflect the individuality of our vineyard terroir.
In the vineyard
Mitre Rocks vineyard is situated on the lower slopes of Central Otago’s Pisa Range, below the nearby Mitre Rocks formation. Our vines grow in glacial schist – low-fertility, alluvial soils typical of the Cromwell Basin.
We experience a cool climate of continental extremes – hot, dry summers with cool, dry autumns that promote intense flavour development of our fruit.
Our vineyard is intensively and carefully managed by award-winning viticulturists Robin and James Dicey of Grape Vision Ltd. The vines were hand thinned and leaf plucked from low-density vine plantings of Pinot Noir clones 5, 6, 115, 667 and 777.
In the winery
Under the care of award-winning winemaker Carol Bunn of Vinpro, this wine was crafted from a warm vintage with an exceptional crop harvested at 25º Brix and fermented in small open-top stainless steel fermenters for approximately 21 to 28 days. The wine was barrel matured for ten months in 228L French barriques (approx 40% new and 60% one to three-year-old).
Analysis at bottling: Alcohol 14.5% TA = 6.50 g/L pH = 3.50
We choose to bottle our wine under screw cap to ensure freshness, avoid cork taint and to enhance the ageing ability of the wine.
In the glass
This barrel-selected wine, crafted from our very best parcels, is opulent and dark, with big, dense fruit. The attractive bouquet hints at the plum and cherry fl avours you’ll encounter on the palate, where they are enlivened by dried herbal complexities. The tannins are velvety, while the structure and length is impressive. This Pinot Noir is seductively approachable on its own, but is also an excellent accompaniment to food and should age very well.
Food match
Mitre Rocks Pinot Noir is well suited to game dishes, venison, duck, lamb and dishes featuring mushrooms.
